Understanding Child Support in Ontario

What is child support?

Child support is money paid by one parent to help cover the costs of raising children after separation. It's the right of the child, not the parent.

How is it calculated?

Ontario uses the Federal Child Support Guidelines, which provide a table of amounts based on:

  • The paying parent's gross annual income
  • The number of children
  • The province where the paying parent lives

Income "Floor" and "Ceiling"

The Child Support Guidelines specify that no child support is typically payable if the payor's income is below $12,000. Conversely, if a payor's income exceeds $150,000, the calculation is no longer just a table look-up. The court has discretion to increase the amount based on a percentage of the income over $150,000.

How does parenting arrangement affect support?

  • If children live mostly with one parent: The other parent pays support based on their income
  • If parenting is shared (roughly 50/50): Both parents' incomes are considered, and the higher earner pays the difference between what each would owe

What about extra expenses?

On top of the table amount, parents may also share "Section 7" expenses, which include:

  • Childcare costs
  • Health insurance premiums and medical/dental expenses not covered by insurance
  • Educational expenses (tutoring, private school)
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Post-secondary education costs

These are usually shared in proportion to each parent's income.
